Sir George Calvert
Sir George Calvert
Lord Baltimore - Founder of Maryland

The Colvards of Ashe and Wilkes Counties, North Carolina may be descended from Sir George Calvert of Yorkshire, England. However, other information suggests that the first of our line of Colvards, (William, who married Temperance Butterworth) imigrated to America from England at the age of 24. A List of Emigrants from England to America 1718-1759 lists William as departing Nottingham, England on November 17, 1725 bound for America.

Sir Calvert was a member of a family that dates back to 1366 in Yorkshire, England. He was born in 1580, in England, at Kipling, in the chapelry of Bolton. His father was Leonard Calvert, a country gentleman, and his mother, Grace Crossland. These two families' coat-of-arms, the Calverts and Crosslands, are used in the design of the Maryland State flag.

At the young age of fourteen, in 1594, George entered Trinity College, Oxford. It was here that he became proficient in Latin, and earned a bachelor's degree in 1597, and an honorary degree of Master of Arts in 1604. In this year on November 22, he married Anne Mynne in St. Peter's, Cornhill, London. Anne was the daughter of George Mynne and Elizabeth Wroth, of Hertingfordbury, Hertfordshire, England.

Sir Calvert was the person responsible for securing Maryland's colonial charter. Historians have traditionally designated him the founder of Maryland. Born in Yorkshire, England, he was educated at Trinity College, University of Oxford. After being elected to Parliment in 1609, Calvert was knighted in 1617 by James I of England and became his secretary of state in 1619. In 1625 Calvert became a Roman Catholic and, because no Catholics were then permitted to hold public office in England, resigned from Parliament. James rewarded him for his public service, however, by granting him large estates in Ireland and giving him the title Baron Baltimore.

Thereafter Lord Baltimore devoted himself to establishing colonies in the New World. In 1623 Calvert received a charter for the colony of Avalon, Newfoundland, which he had founded in 1621. In 1628 he and his family went to live in Avalon, but because of the harsh climate he decided to establish a colony farther to the south.

In 1632 King Charles I granted him a tract of land to the northeast of the colony of Virginia. The grant comprised the present-day states of Maryland and Delaware and was named Maryland in honor of Charles's wife, Henrietta Maria, queen consort of England. On April 13, 1632, George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore died, before the charter had passed the great seal, or was issued. This charter, which was copied from that of Avalon, had the date of June 20, 1632, and thus was issued to George's first son, Cecilius, the second Lord Baltimore. George's second son, Leonard, became the first govenor of Maryland.
